1st Grade Magic of Math Unit 4: Geometry & Fractions

Build a strong foundation in geometry and fractions with 1st Grade Magic of Math Unit 4! This four-week math unit gives students meaningful opportunities to explore 2D shapes, 3D shapes, composing shapes, and fractions through hands-on learning and visual models.

Students classify and describe shapes based on their attributes, combine shapes to create new figures, and explore how shapes can be divided into equal parts. Engaging activities, games, and student practice help make these important geometry and fraction concepts concrete and easy to understand.

Week 1: 2D Shapes

Students explore two-dimensional shapes and learn to identify, describe, classify, and sort them based on their attributes.

Skills practiced include:

  • Identifying and naming 2D shapes
  • Describing shapes by their attributes
  • Identifying the number of sides and vertices
  • Comparing 2D shapes
  • Classifying and sorting shapes based on attributes
  • Recognizing defining attributes of shapes
  • Identifying shapes in different orientations and sizes

Week 2: Composing 2D Shapes

Students deepen their understanding of geometry by exploring how smaller shapes can be combined to create new shapes.

Skills practiced include:

  • Composing 2D shapes
  • Combining two or more shapes to create a new shape
  • Identifying shapes within a composite figure
  • Creating composite shapes in different ways
  • Using spatial reasoning to build and describe shapes
  • Exploring relationships between 2D shapes

Week 3: 3D Shapes

Students explore three-dimensional shapes and learn to identify, describe, classify, and compare them based on their attributes.

Skills practiced include:

  • Identifying and naming 3D shapes
  • Describing attributes of 3D shapes
  • Classifying and sorting 3D shapes
  • Comparing 3D shapes based on their attributes
  • Recognizing 3D shapes in real-world objects
  • Exploring how 3D shapes can roll, slide, and stack

Week 4: Fractions

Students are introduced to fractions by exploring how shapes and objects can be divided into equal and unequal parts.

Skills practiced include:

  • Identifying equal and unequal parts
  • Partitioning shapes into equal parts
  • Understanding halves and fourths
  • Identifying one-half and one-fourth of a whole
  • Understanding that equal shares of the same whole must be the same size
  • Describing wholes divided into two and four equal shares
  • Using visual models to represent fractional parts

What’s Included

  • 20 days of detailed lesson plans
  • Teacher mini-lesson materials
  • Hands-on math activities
  • Interactive notebook activities
  • Math games and partner practice
  • Student practice pages
  • Vocabulary cards
  • Anchor charts and visual supports
  • Assessments

This comprehensive unit gives first graders opportunities to build, sort, classify, compare, compose, and partition as they develop a strong conceptual understanding of geometry and beginning fractions.
