1st Grade Magic of Math Unit 5: Mid-Year Mix Up

Review and build on important first-grade math skills with 1st Grade Magic of Math Unit 5: Mid-Year Mix Up! This four-week math unit gives students continued practice with number sense, place value, comparing and ordering numbers, related facts, missing addends, and addition strategies.

Each week focuses on a different set of skills, giving students opportunities to strengthen previous learning while developing new strategies through hands-on activities, visual models, math games, partner practice, and problem solving.

Week 1: Counting, Skip Counting & Plus/Minus 10

Students strengthen number sense as they work with counting patterns and explore how numbers change when adding or subtracting 10.

Skills practiced include:

  • Counting forward and backward
  • Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s
  • Finding 10 more and 10 less
  • Recognizing patterns on a hundred chart
  • Using number relationships to solve problems
  • Applying counting strategies to numbers in different sequences

Week 2: Place Value, Comparing & Ordering Numbers

Students build on their understanding of tens and ones as they represent, compare, and order larger numbers.

Skills practiced include:

  • Understanding place value to 120 (to 99 for Common Core)
  • Representing numbers using tens and ones
  • Identifying the value of digits
  • Composing and decomposing two-digit numbers
  • Comparing numbers using place value
  • Using greater than, less than, and equal to
  • Ordering numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least

Week 3: Related Facts & Missing Addends

Students explore relationships between addition and subtraction to develop more efficient problem-solving strategies.

Skills practiced include:

  • Understanding related addition and subtraction facts
  • Creating and solving fact families
  • Using addition to solve subtraction problems
  • Finding missing addends
  • Using known facts to solve unknown facts
  • Building addition and subtraction fact fluency
  • Solving equations with an unknown number

Week 4: Three Addends & Properties of Addition

Students extend their addition skills as they solve equations with three addends and explore properties that make addition more efficient.

Skills practiced include:

  • Adding three numbers
  • Combining addends in different ways
  • Using known facts to solve three-addend equations
  • Exploring the commutative property of addition
  • Exploring the associative property of addition
  • Grouping addends to make friendly numbers
  • Selecting efficient addition strategies
  • Solving addition problems with multiple addends
