Kindergarten Magic of Math: Comparing Numbers (2-Week Unit)

This 2-week Kindergarten math unit helps students build a strong foundation in comparing quantities and numbers through hands-on lessons, engaging activities, and meaningful math discussions. Students learn to identify when groups are the same, equal, greater than, or less than, while practicing important counting and comparison strategies.

Each day follows the Magic of Math lesson structure, making planning simple and instruction consistent for young learners.

Daily Lesson Structure

Every lesson includes:

  • Objective and vocabulary

  • Mini-lesson with teacher modeling

  • Hands-on student activity or partner game

  • Independent practice

Students are actively engaged in comparing numbers by counting objects, building quantities, matching sets, and explaining their thinking using math language.

Week 1: Same and Equal

Students begin by developing an understanding of equal quantities. Through interactive lessons and activities, students practice:

  • Identifying when two groups have the same amount

  • Matching objects one-to-one

  • Counting sets to confirm equality

Week 2: More, Less, and Comparing Numbers (Farm Theme)

This week includes fun farm-themed math activities such as feeding animals, filling barns, tractor pulls, and building towers. These engaging activities help students:

  • Identify which number is greater than or less than
