Make reading comprehension meaningful and relatable with this engaging Rooted in Reading companion for Crankenstein by Samantha Berger! This week-long resource uses the humor and personality of the story to help students make meaningful connections, sequence important events, identify problems and solutions, and strengthen reading, vocabulary, and grammar skills.

Over the course of 5 days, students will focus on making connections to a text, including connections that help them better understand the characters and events in the story. Students will also practice sequencing events and identifying the problem and solution, helping them see how the important parts of a story work together.

Students will extend their learning with the paired nonfiction text When I Get Mad, providing an opportunity to connect ideas from the fictional story to a real-world topic while strengthening informational reading skills.

Vocabulary instruction is woven throughout the week with targeted work on the words despise, exhausted, devastated, ill, companion, and common. Students interact with vocabulary in context to build word knowledge and a deeper understanding of the text.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive where students interact with a mentor sentence, building skills in close reading, editing, grammar, comprehension, and noticing how authors use language.

The week's grammar and language instruction focuses on shades of meaning, quotations, and synonyms for "said." Students explore how word choice can change the strength or meaning of a sentence and practice using more precise language in their own speaking and writing.
