Explore friendship, differences, and the fascinating world of bats with this engaging Rooted in Reading companion for Stellaluna by Janell Cannon! This week-long resource helps students dig deeper into the events of the story while strengthening comprehension through problem and solution, making connections, and sequencing.

Over the course of 5 days, students will identify and analyze the problems and solutions within the story and consider how the characters respond to the challenges they encounter. Students will also practice making connections that deepen their understanding of the text and sequencing important events to see how the story develops from beginning to end.

Students will extend their learning with paired nonfiction reading about bats, building background knowledge while making connections between the fictional story and real-world information. This fiction/nonfiction pairing gives students a meaningful reason to apply what they learn across multiple texts.

Vocabulary instruction focuses on the words scent, perched, dodging, anxious, babble, and trembling. Students interact with these words throughout the week to build vocabulary and strengthen their understanding of the story.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive featuring a mentor sentence. Students use these sentences to practice close reading, editing, grammar, comprehension, and noticing the choices authors make when constructing sentences.

The week's grammar focus is strong verbs, helping students recognize how precise verbs can make writing more vivid and interesting. Students can carry this learning beyond the mentor text and apply stronger word choices to their own writing.

This resource includes:
