Help students discover how authors reveal information and build a story over time with this engaging Rooted in Reading companion for Substitute Creacher by Chris Gall! This week-long resource gives students meaningful practice with more sophisticated literary techniques while strengthening comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar.

Over the course of 5 days, students will explore foreshadowing, text clues, and flashbacks. Students will learn to notice clues an author provides about what may happen later in a story and analyze how flashbacks take readers into the past to reveal important information about characters and events.

Students will also explore the paired nonfiction topic Halloween Traditions, giving them an opportunity to extend their learning through informational text and build background knowledge related to the week's reading.

Vocabulary instruction focuses on the words snickered, glared, mischief, tattered, plotted, and tormented, helping students develop a deeper understanding of rich vocabulary from the text.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive centered around a mentor sentence from the story. Students use the sentence to practice close reading, editing, grammar, noticing an author's language choices, and thinking more deeply about meaning.

The week's grammar focus is writing quotations, giving students targeted practice with correctly representing dialogue and quoted words in their writing.
