Planning meaningful content that makes learning accessible for all students is at the forefront of how educators plan out our lessons. In order to create a level playing field for all students, we must have clarity around our students’ strengths and difficulties. Data-tracking can help set us up for educational equity.
But data is a time-consuming, all-encompassing concept for many, and unfortunately we are not always given the training or tools to effectively use it.
Data-tracking involves evaluating student understanding to mastery. In any core standard or concept, we can use data to track each individual student’s needs pertaining to that area. We are giving you a data tracking sheet that can be used with any type of assessment!
Next, take a look at the data-tracking checklist! These are a few things to keep in mind (and check off) as you gather data to intentionally drive instruction.
When you take that data to create differentiation in your small groups, keep in mind the few training tips we have given you! Get started with fluid Fridays, where you use weekly data to make your Friday groups fluid. Take some time to establish your 5 small group go-to resources or manipulatives, so you can spend more focused time planning. Lastly, spend time setting up “what everyone else is doing” while you are pulling small groups. This doesn’t need to be 5 different things, but instead should be independent application of the whole group skills you are working on!
