It might take a couple different ways of practicing shape formation before your students can identify and build shapes independently. I like to provide different opportunities for my students to recognize, match, trace, sort, and build shapes during our math block. Here are my 3 tips for teaching shapes:
- Go on a “shape hunt!” Practice looking for certain shapes around your classroom and school. They can take a clipboard and draw the shapes they see.
- Give the students colored construction paper. Model on the board how to draw different shapes. Ask them to draw the shapes on their paper and cut them out. Come together as a class and sort all of the shapes they made.
- Use the “Shape Mats” linked below for your students to build shapes independently!
This freebie includes shape mats for you to print and laminate. The students can use different manipulatives like- blocks, mini erasers, or seasonal objects to build the shape. They place one manipulative in each circle to form the shape. You could even have the students use stickers or dot paint to build the shape as well!
