Taking a quick status of class and asking kids what step there on is one way to find out, but classroom time is precious. Writing Workshop Desk Tents to the rescue! Desk tents can quickly display students’ writing status. At a glance, you’ll know which step of the writing process students are working on.

Many teachers have used desk tents to help learn students’ names at the very beginning of the year. Writing Workshop desk tents are the same, but they’re two sided and labeled with all eight stages of the writing process. Students can simply fold and display the side that shows the stage of the writing process they’re on. Teachers can easily see who might need help first, who is ready to pair up for a writing conference, and who has been brainstorming for three days straight! Each side of the desk tents includes a writing process label along with a brief descriptor that reminds students what they should be doing to find success.
