This Poetry Writing Unit is perfect for 2nd grade writing & 3rd grade writing classrooms and is designed to inspire students to become confident authors of poetry and poems. Using a structured Writer’s Workshop approach, students are guided through the full writing process as they practice writing poems with rich sensory language and supportive poem frames.

Week 1 focuses on writing a detailed 5 Senses Poem, while Week 2 is intentionally modeled a little differently to give students broad exposure to multiple types of poems. This structure allows students to explore poetry creatively while still receiving clear instruction and scaffolding.

Students learn how to use sensory language to create vivid and engaging poems.
  • Brainstorming adjectives about popcorn (anchor chart & printable)
  • Writing a 5 Senses Poem using a guided template
  • Revising with similes using the Simile French Fry chart and student booklet
  • Editing for capitals and punctuation through hands-on poem reconstruction

🌸 Week 2: Poetry Book – Exploring Different Types of Poems
Students create a poetry book shaped like a flower pot, adding one poem each day and publishing their work on a final flower pot craft. Digital charts are included to teach the rules and patterns of each poem type.
