From Jennifer LaRocque:

Here are 3 ways to practice blending phonemes using a flip chart blending board with your students:

  1. Hand each student a “pop it” fidget toy. The teacher will flip to a word on the chart. Then,  the students will pop each phoneme as they say it aloud slowly. Then, the students will flip the fidget over saying the same phonemes quicker, blending the sounds together as they pop.

  2. Give each student a white board and a dry erase marker.  Have the students draw 3 short lines on their white board. The teacher will flip to a word on the flip chart.  On each line, the students will write the phonemes as they say them aloud. As they blend the phonemes together, have them take their finger and run their finger across the board below the word. The smoothness from the whiteboard will help the students kinesthetically feel the blending of the phonemes together. Bonus tip: Have the students trace to erase the letters. As they erase each phoneme (or letter) they should say the sound aloud to help them practice the letter sounds.

  3. Get students moving by having them jump or stomp as they decode the word. The teacher will flip to a word on the chart. The students will stomp (or jump) as they say each phoneme in the word. Then,  have the students slide as they blend the word together. This is a great way to get students moving as they practice decoding words.

I incorporate different phonemic skills onto my flip chart in order to differentiate for my students during small group time. Some of my students are ready for more advanced skills such as digraphs and other students are still working on sounding out 2 letter words. It allows me to use the flip chart with multiple groups to meet their needs.

This Flip Chart is great to help students work on blending words. This freebie contains phonemes cards to make a blending board flip chart using a 3 ring binder.

You can print  the phonemes cards you would like to practice with your students. I recommend printing the beginning sounds, vowels and ending sounds on different colored paper. To learn how to make the 3 ring binder blending board you can watch the tutorial that I posted on Youtube by clicking here. {Insert Url from below)
