Introduce students to the ways authors share true information with this engaging Rooted in Reading companion for The Girl Who Thought in Pictures: The Story of Dr. Temple Grandin by Julia Finley Mosca. This week-long resource gives students meaningful opportunities to explore text structure and make connections while building reading, vocabulary, and grammar skills.

Over the course of 5 days, students will explore nonfiction text elements, narrative text elements, and making connections. Through discussions, anchor charts, response activities, and printables, students will think about how authors can communicate true information while also using narrative elements to tell a person's story.

Students will extend their nonfiction learning through the paired topic Science Superstars, building additional background knowledge and making connections to the ideas introduced in the mentor text.

Vocabulary instruction focuses on the words unique, shy, invention, ranch, and taunt, giving students opportunities to develop word knowledge and use context to support understanding.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive centered around a mentor sentence from the text. Students revisit language from the book to practice close reading, editing, grammar, noticing, and thinking deeply about sentence meaning.

The week's grammar focus is ABC order, with targeted instruction and activities that help students practice alphabetizing words.

Engaging response activities throughout the unit give students multiple ways to demonstrate comprehension and connect their reading, vocabulary, and language learning.
