With the widening gaps in literacy across America, it is more evident than ever that there is a critical need for Science of Reading based lessons in every classroom. Often, this need for explicit phonological awareness + phonics instruction is supported in K-2. This leaves many upper grade educators feeling unsupported and frustrated. So what do we need to do?
- Even in the upper grades, we need to follow a phonics scope and sequence, from early phonics skills through morphology for whole group discourse and tier 2 and 3 interventions
- Use an assessment tool to figure out where to start along the sequence with phonics instruction
- Teach explicit phonological awareness, phonics, morphology, and vocabulary lessons.
But how many times have you been frustrated because there are no resources for your upper grade kiddos and you have no idea where to start?! In this freebie I gave you a scope and sequence that is normed for upper grades, templates to set up word study notebooks, a sample lesson plan, and checklist of morphemes to teach.
