Week 2: Area & Partitioning Rectangles
Students build an understanding of area using square units and learn to partition rectangles into rows and columns.
Students practice:
- Understanding area as the number of square units covering a space
- Finding the area of rectangles
- Counting square units
- Partitioning rectangles into equal-sized squares
- Using rows and columns to determine area
Activities such as Toss It! Draw It! Total It!, Area Dinosaur, Spin, Cover, and Race!, Area Crowns, and My Dream Room make area visual and concrete.
Week 3: Centimeters & Meters
Students transition to metric measurement as they explore centimeters and meters while continuing to estimate, measure, and compare lengths.
Students will also investigate the relationship between the size of a unit and the number of units needed to measure an object.
Engaging activities include Line Scoot, Lego Towers, Meter Derby, measuring distance with paper airplanes, and Musical Math.
Week 4: Measurement Word Problems
Students apply their measurement knowledge to one-step word problems involving length and learn strategies for determining how to solve each problem.
Students practice:
- Interpreting measurement word problems
- Determining whether to add or subtract
- Representing their thinking with pictures and steps
- Using problem-solving strategies
- Solving measurement problems with number lines
