Make teaching 2nd grade place value and number sense engaging, hands-on, and easy to plan with 2nd Grade Magic of Math Unit 1: Place Value! This comprehensive 4-week math unit includes 20 days of lessons and activities that help students build a strong understanding of numbers, place value, comparing numbers, and ordering numbers.
Students begin by exploring patterns on the hundreds chart, skip counting, and even and odd numbers before moving into place value with hundreds, tens, and ones. From there, students work with larger numbers, multiple forms of numbers, composing and decomposing numbers, and finally comparing and ordering numbers.
Each day includes structured math instruction with lesson plans, mini-lessons, hands-on activities, games, word problems, and student practice so you have the resources you need to teach each skill from introduction to application.
Students will practice:
Week 1: Number Sense, Skip Counting & Even/Odd Numbers
Students build foundational number sense by exploring the hundreds chart, identifying number patterns, skip counting, and determining whether numbers are even or odd.
Week 2: Place Value to 999
Students develop an understanding of hundreds, tens, and ones while representing and building numbers in multiple ways. Students work with standard, expanded, and word form and practice composing and decomposing numbers using concrete and pictorial models.
Week 3: Place Value with Larger Numbers
Students continue developing place value understanding with 3-digit and 4-digit numbers. Activities reinforce digit value, number forms, composing and decomposing numbers, and representing numbers in multiple ways.
Week 4: Comparing & Ordering Numbers
Students apply their understanding of place value to compare and order numbers. They practice using comparison symbols, reasoning about digit values, and putting numbers in order.
The daily word problems give students opportunities to strengthen problem-solving skills by creating models, writing equations, and finding solutions. Hands-on activities and partner games provide meaningful practice while helping students develop a deeper understanding of number relationships and place value.
This unit includes alignment to Common Core Math Standards and Texas TEKS. Standards are identified throughout the lesson plans to make planning and instruction easier.
Whether you use Magic of Math as your primary math curriculum or to supplement your existing curriculum, this unit provides a complete sequence of 2nd grade place value lessons and activities designed to build number sense through meaningful, interactive math experiences.
