Celebrate family traditions and differences with this engaging Rooted in Reading companion for Duck for Turkey Day by Jacqueline Jules! This week-long resource helps students connect a story to their own lives, other books, and the world around them, while strengthening comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar skills.

Over the course of 5 days, students will focus on making connections, including text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections. Through discussions, anchor charts, response activities, and printables, students will learn the difference between shallow and deep connections and how meaningful connections help them better understand a story.

Students will also read the paired nonfiction reader Talking About Traditions to learn about holiday traditions and dishes from around the world, building background knowledge and making connections to the week's mentor text.

Vocabulary instruction focuses on the words market, peek, gather, gentle, blurt, tofu, and arrive, giving students multiple opportunities to build word knowledge and understand vocabulary in context.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive featuring a mentor sentence from the story. Students use the sentence to practice close reading, editing, grammar, noticing how language works, and thinking deeply about meaning.

The week's grammar focus is adverbs of place, with practice using words that tell where in sentences.
