Help students make meaningful connections while reading with this engaging Rooted in Reading companion for Hoot and Peep by Lita Judge! This week-long resource helps students connect a story to their own experiences, other texts, and the world around them while building strong reading, vocabulary, and grammar skills.

Over the course of 5 days, students will dive into comprehension lessons focused on text-to-self, text-to-world, and text-to-text connections. Through interactive discussions, anchor charts, response activities, and printables, students will learn how making connections can help them better understand and think about what they read.

Students will also explore nonfiction learning about owls, giving them an opportunity to build background knowledge and make connections between literary and informational texts.

Vocabulary instruction is woven throughout the week with activities designed to develop understanding of the words moonbeam, peep, mistake, joy, and drift.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive where students interact with a mentor sentence from the story—building skills in reading, editing, grammar, noticing language, and thinking about the meaning of a sentence.

The week also includes a grammar focus on onomatopoeias, with targeted instruction and opportunities for students to recognize and work with sound words in language.

To keep students engaged, Rooted in Reading also incorporates hands-on and creative response opportunities that help students connect their learning back to the text.
