Help students connect what they read to the world around them with this meaningful Rooted in Reading companion for Maddi's Fridge by Lois Brandt! This week-long resource helps students make text-to-world connections while building strong reading, vocabulary, and grammar skills.

Over the course of 5 days, students will dive into comprehension lessons focused on text-to-world connections. Through interactive discussions, anchor charts, response activities, and printables, students will learn how connecting a story to real-world issues helps them think more deeply about what they read.

Students will also read the nonfiction reader How to Be Charitable and share their own ideas for helping others, building background knowledge and connecting literary and informational texts.

Vocabulary instruction is woven throughout the week with activities designed to develop understanding of the words protein, scrambled, carton, promise, and sloshed.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive where students interact with a mentor sentence from the story, building skills in reading, editing, grammar, noticing language, and thinking about the meaning of a sentence.

The week also includes a grammar focus on common and proper nouns, with targeted instruction and practice sorting nouns and recognizing the difference between common and proper nouns.
