Bring seasonal reading and meaningful literacy instruction together with this Rooted in Reading companion for Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper! This week-long resource uses the engaging fall story to strengthen comprehension while helping students notice how authors use repetition, rhythm, and rhyme.

Over the course of 5 days, students will practice asking and answering questions about a text while also exploring repetition, rhythm, and rhyme. Through interactive discussions, anchor charts, reading responses, and printables, students will think closely about both what a story says and how an author uses language.

Students will also explore the paired nonfiction topic Perfect Pumpkins, building background knowledge and extending the pumpkin theme into informational reading.

Vocabulary instruction is incorporated throughout the week with the words wail, wander, steep, squabble, and slurp. Students have multiple opportunities to interact with and develop an understanding of these words.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive where students work with a mentor sentence from the story. These short daily lessons encourage students to read closely, notice interesting language, edit, apply grammar skills, and think about sentence meaning.

The week's grammar focus is the exclamation point, with targeted instruction and activities that help students understand how punctuation contributes to the meaning and expression of a sentence.

Students also participate in engaging response activities that connect their comprehension, language, and nonfiction learning throughout the week.
