Turn students' natural curiosity about spiders into meaningful reading practice with this Rooted in Reading companion for Spiders by Gail Gibbons! This week-long resource gives students opportunities to dig into informational text while strengthening their ability to locate facts, compare texts, make connections, and distinguish between fiction and nonfiction.

Over the course of 5 days, students will focus on locating facts within nonfiction text and using information from their reading to build understanding. Students also explore the differences between fiction and nonfiction, make connections across texts and ideas, and practice comparing and contrasting information.

Students will extend their learning with the paired nonfiction topic Ants Are Everywhere! This gives students another informational text to explore while providing meaningful opportunities to compare animals, facts, and information across texts.

Vocabulary instruction focuses on the content-rich words arachnids, scurries, burrows, ballooning, harmful, and poisonous. Students build both vocabulary and background knowledge as they learn more about spiders and the way they live.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive where students closely examine a mentor sentence to build skills in reading, editing, grammar, comprehension, and understanding how sentences work.

The week's grammar focus is types of sentences, helping students recognize and use different sentence types while paying attention to their purpose and punctuation.
