Explore sharing and community with this engaging Rooted in Reading companion for Stone Soup by Marcia Brown! This week-long resource helps students connect with a classic folktale and think about how characters change while strengthening comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar skills.
Over the course of 5 days, students will make predictions and practice making connections, including text-to-self and text-to-world connections. Students will also explore character changes by looking at how the villagers' attitudes shift from the beginning, middle, and end of the story, then recall the steps to make stone soup and write their own how-to pieces.
Students will extend their learning with the paired nonfiction reader How to Become a Chef, connecting the story to real-world information. Two versions of the reader are included, one slightly more challenging than the other, so you can choose the best fit for your students.
Vocabulary instruction focuses on the words deceive, trudged, splendid, entertained, fetch, village, peasants, barley, cellar, spare, hospitality, harvest, cupboard, broth, banquet, loft, and charity. Students interact with these words throughout the week to build vocabulary and strengthen their understanding of the story.
Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive featuring a mentor sentence. Students use these sentences to practice close reading, editing, grammar, comprehension, and noticing the choices authors make when constructing sentences.
The week's grammar focus is building complete sentences, with practice capitalizing correctly and expanding and rearranging simple sentences.
