Help students retell stories with confidence with this engaging Rooted in Reading companion for The Scarecrow's Hat by Ken Brown! This week-long resource helps students retell a story in sequence while building strong reading, vocabulary, and grammar skills.
Over the course of 5 days, students will dive into comprehension lessons focused on retelling. Through interactive discussions, anchor charts, picture cards, response activities, and printables, students will learn how to retell the events of a story in order using the characters and what each one needs.
Students will also read the nonfiction reader Animal Parenting Styles and learn about animals and their babies, building background knowledge and connecting literary and informational texts.
Vocabulary instruction is woven throughout the week with activities designed to develop understanding of the words swap, ledge, flick, grateful, and battered.
Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive where students interact with a mentor sentence from the story, building skills in reading, editing, grammar, noticing language, and thinking about the meaning of a sentence.
The week also includes a grammar focus on prepositions, with targeted instruction and practice using direction words to describe where things are and using prepositions in sentences.
