Kick off the Thanksgiving season with this engaging Rooted in Reading companion for Turkey Bowl by Phil Bildner! This week-long resource helps students track how a character's feelings change and drive the action of a story, while strengthening comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar skills.

Over the course of 5 days, students will explore character feelings and character change, following how Ethan's feelings shift from the beginning, middle, and end of the book. Students will also practice summarizing with the Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then, Finally strategy.

Students will also explore the paired nonfiction reader American Football, extending the learning from the mentor text while building background knowledge through informational reading.

Vocabulary instruction focuses on the words gazed, trudged, simmering, declared, annual, frigid, wafted, scampered, gloomily, heaps, plowed, and feast, giving students opportunities to develop word knowledge through synonym and antonym games, sentence writing, and vocabulary prompts.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive featuring a mentor sentence from the text. Students closely examine the sentence to practice reading, editing, grammar, noticing language choices, and thinking deeply about meaning.

The week's grammar focus is commas in a series, with practice using commas to separate three or more words or phrases.
