1st Grade Magic of Math Unit 6: Measurement

Build a strong foundation in linear measurement with 1st Grade Magic of Math Unit 6! This two-week math unit introduces students to measuring, comparing, and ordering lengths using hands-on exploration and nonstandard units of measurement.

Students learn what it means to measure an object, practice comparing the lengths of different objects, and develop important measurement skills through manipulatives, visual models, interactive activities, and meaningful practice.

Week 1: Introduction to Linear Measurement & Ordering Lengths

Students are introduced to linear measurement and explore ways to describe, compare, and order objects based on length.

Skills practiced include:

  • Understanding what it means to measure length
  • Describing objects as longer or shorter
  • Comparing the lengths of two objects
  • Comparing objects directly by aligning endpoints
  • Ordering multiple objects by length
  • Ordering objects from shortest to longest
  • Ordering objects from longest to shortest
  • Using measurement vocabulary to describe and compare lengths

Week 2: Nonstandard Measurement & Comparing Lengths

Students learn to measure objects using nonstandard units and apply their understanding to compare measurements.

Skills practiced include:

  • Measuring length with nonstandard units
  • Using equal-size units to measure accurately
  • Placing measurement units end to end without gaps or overlaps
  • Counting units to determine an object's length
  • Comparing measurements of different objects
  • Determining which object is longer or shorter
  • Using measurement to describe and compare objects
  • Applying measurement skills through hands-on problem solving

What’s Included

  • Detailed daily lesson plans
  • Teacher mini-lesson materials
  • Hands-on measurement activities
  • Interactive notebook activities
  • Math games and partner practice
  • Student practice pages
  • Word problem practice
  • Anchor charts and visual supports
  • Assessments

This unit gives first graders meaningful opportunities to measure, compare, and order lengths while developing an understanding of how measurement works. Hands-on experiences with real objects and nonstandard units help students build the conceptual foundation they need for future work with standard measurement.
