Rooted in Reading: The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses Read Aloud Activities | Reading Comprehension for Major Events and Central Message - Shop GYTO - Get Your Teach On

About this resource

Explore a beautiful Native American legend with this engaging Rooted in Reading companion for The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses by Paul Goble! This week-long resource helps students tell the difference between major and minor events and determine the central message of a story, while strengthening comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar skills.

Over the course of 5 days, students will distinguish between major and minor events, look closely at how the girl responds to the events in the story, and use what they learn to determine the central message and how they know.

Students will also explore the paired nonfiction reader Native American Tribes, extending the learning from the mentor text while building background knowledge through informational reading.

Vocabulary instruction focuses on the words rumble, pursued, grazing, admired, vanished, courage, daybreak, meadows, terror, horizon, wispy, and colt, giving students opportunities to develop word knowledge through synonym and antonym games, sentence writing, and vocabulary prompts.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive featuring a mentor sentence from the text. Students closely examine the sentence to practice reading, editing, grammar, noticing language choices, and thinking deeply about meaning.

The week's grammar focus is adverbs that tell when and how often, with practice telling adverbs and adjectives apart and using adverbs in sentences.

This resource includes:
