Rooted in Reading: The Rough-Face Girl Read Aloud Activities | Reading Comprehension for Visualizing and Comparing Characters

About this resource

Explore an Algonquin Cinderella story with this engaging Rooted in Reading companion for The Rough-Face Girl by Rafe Martin! This week-long resource helps students create mental images and compare characters and stories while strengthening comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar skills.

Over the course of 5 days, students will practice visualizing the text by creating mental images as they listen, then describe and compare the characters, looking closely at the Rough-Face Girl and her older sisters. Students will also compare the story to a version of Cinderella and make text-to-text connections.

Students will build background knowledge before reading with the paired nonfiction reader Northeastern Native Americans, connecting the story to real-world information. Two versions of the reader are included, one slightly more challenging than the other, so you can choose the best fit for your students.

Vocabulary instruction focuses on the words wigwam, desperate, miserable, vanished, stammer, insisted, quiver, ashamed, molded, cruel, haughtily, invisible, buckskin, and village. Students interact with these words throughout the week to build vocabulary and strengthen their understanding of the story.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive featuring a mentor sentence. Students use these sentences to practice close reading, editing, grammar, comprehension, and noticing the choices authors make when constructing sentences.

The week's grammar focus is adjectives, with practice describing characters and nouns using strong describing words.
