Rooted in Reading: Whooo Knew? Read Aloud Activities | Reading Comprehension for Nonfiction Text Features

About this resource

Explore the fascinating world of owls with this engaging Rooted in Reading companion for Whooo Knew? by Annette Whipple! This week-long resource helps students learn how to read informational text and use text features to find information, while strengthening comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar skills.

Over the course of 5 days, students will focus on nonfiction text features such as headings, photographs, maps, close-ups, and charts. Through discussions, anchor charts, a text feature booklet, response activities, and printables, students will learn how each feature helps readers understand what they read.

Students will also read the paired nonfiction reader Enchanting Endangered Birds, building background knowledge and making connections to the week's mentor text.

Vocabulary instruction focuses on the words rodent, talon, pellet, nocturnal, down, roost, and endangered, giving students multiple opportunities to build word knowledge and understand vocabulary in context.

Each day includes a Daily Deep Dive featuring a mentor sentence from the book. Students use the sentence to practice close reading, editing, grammar, noticing how language works, and thinking deeply about meaning.

The week's grammar focus is asking and telling sentences, with practice using periods, question marks, and question words.

This resource includes:

  • 5 days of detailed lesson plans for comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar
