This 2-week Kindergarten math unit helps students build a strong foundation in comparing quantities and numbers through hands-on lessons, engaging activities, and meaningful math discussions. Students learn to identify when groups are the same, equal, greater than, or less than, while practicing important counting and comparison strategies.
Each day follows the Magic of Math lesson structure, making planning simple and instruction consistent for young learners.
Every lesson includes:
Objective and vocabulary
Mini-lesson with teacher modeling
Hands-on student activity or partner game
Independent practice
Students are actively engaged in comparing numbers by counting objects, building quantities, matching sets, and explaining their thinking using math language.
Students begin by developing an understanding of equal quantities. Through interactive lessons and activities, students practice:
Identifying when two groups have the same amount
Matching objects one-to-one
Counting sets to confirm equality
Explaining when two quantities are equal
In week two, students apply their understanding of quantities while learning to compare numbers using greater than and less than.
This week includes fun farm-themed math activities such as feeding animals, filling barns, tractor pulls, and building towers. These engaging activities help students:
Compare quantities using more and less
Identify which number is greater than or less than
Use counting strategies to compare sets
Explain comparisons using math language
Students will learn to:
Compare quantities using more, less, and equal
Compare numbers between 0–10
Use matching and counting strategies to compare sets
Explain comparisons using math vocabulary
